Tourism has emerged as a major driver of urban economic development, as cities focus on employing existing cultural assets and developing new ones. All this is set in motion for the purpose of improving their urban identity and translating that reconstituted image into opportunities for growth. Significant investments in an associated, physical infrastructure in sport, entertainment, recreation, and tourism are now part of the cultural planning strategies that are central to this new agenda. Museums, sports stadiums, and convention centers, along with upgraded public spaces and urban beautification initiatives, are key elements of this rapidly developing policy direction. Cities view this urban rebranding as a recruiting mechanism capable of attracting new economy entrepreneurs and workers. The making of the tourist city is taking place within complex social, political, and economic conditions.
