Bibliometric studies of vocabulary articles using author co‐citation show that an emerging paradigm in vocabulary studies appeared in the 1980s spurred by the appearance of a book, Teaching and Learning Vocabulary , and, in the early 2000s, this became a clear paradigm shift. Continuing themes in vocabulary studies have been the study of native‐speaker vocabulary size, the creation of word lists for language learners, and the role of vocabulary control in the development of reading materials. The greatest innovation for language learning and vocabulary learning in the 20th century was the corpus‐based approach to vocabulary control through the use of well‐researched high‐frequency vocabulary lists. While there have been very few true innovations in the pedagogy of vocabulary learning beyond vocabulary‐controlled extensive reading, there has been considerable research into what makes such activities work, and how to optimize vocabulary learning from such activities.
