Spatial data infrastructures are Internet‐based facilities that are used to search, find, access, and share location‐specific information and data. Almost every country in the world has embarked on the development of such infrastructures over the last 20 years to support improved environmental management, risk assessment, service delivery, and many other applications in the public and private sectors. The components and key challenges in building a spatial data infrastructure are discussed using an example from Europe.
