Recreation comprises voluntary leisure activities usually undertaken in or near the home environment. Geographical studies of recreation commenced in the early twentieth century and were long primarily focused on outdoor recreation in natural and rural areas. Since the 1970s, recreation geographies have focused on urban recreation and leisure as well as parks, protected areas, and wilderness. The field has had a strong applied geography and planning emphasis using qualitative and quantitative methods to examine issues of access to recreation resources, recreation satisfaction, economic impacts, physical and social carrying capacity, environmental impacts, and recreation constraints. Concerns over the provision of recreation opportunities have meant that recreation geographers have also become involved in issues of environmental and social justice, as well as contemporary concerns with embodied and socialized practices and their multisensory sensitivities, including with respect to online recreation and virtual environments, along with the effects of climate change on recreation.
