The ancient city of Oropos, which may be identified with Homeric Graia ( Il . 2, 498), lies at the border between Attica and Boiotia, on the mainland side of the Southern Euboean Gulf, opposite Eretria. Its territory, the coastal plain of Oropia with its major port at the mouth of river Asopus, extended between Attica and Tanagra (Paus. 1.34) and was easily accessed from eastern Boiotia.
