This article centres on the Bronze Age in Switzerland and the Central Alps, where several geographical zones were considered fit for settlement activity. It describes the start of the Bronze Age as a period of favourable climatic conditions, which slowly deteriorated during the middle of the second and early first millennium BC. In some areas of the Inner Alps, however, a major phase of settlement expansion and intensification occurred during the Middle Bronze Age, which may have been due to certain societal and environmental settings. The article then discusses the settlements, which were normally built in wetland areas or in topo-strategic locations, and the usual structures that were built within these settlements. It ends with sections on the economic activities conducted by the settlers – specifically subsistence economy – and their societal structure and ideological background.
