The Chremonidean War is a thinly‐documented conflict that nonetheless was of epochal importance in the political history of the Greek mainland. The war united the Athenians and Spartans one last time to head a coalition of poleis in defense of their freedom ( eleutheria ) against a tyrannical foreign monarch. This time, however, the outside bogeyman was the ruler of Macedonia, Antigonos II Gonatas.
