Hamilcar nicknamed Barca crushed the great Mercenary and Libyan Revolt against Carthage (241–237 bce ), became effective master of the state, and from 237 bce to his death on campaign in winter 229/8 imposed Carthaginian rule over most of southern Spain, a new empire that re‐energized Carthage and enabled a lasting dominance in politics and warfare by his son‐in‐law Hasdrubal and then his eldest son Hannibal.
