The German philosopher Hans‐Georg Gadamer (1900–2002) was the very influential founder of “philosophical hermeneutics.” He argued that our understanding is always guided by “prejudices,” which are not to be understood as preconceived or false opinions not established on facts or reason, but as provisional anticipations of meaning that can be rectified. Nonetheless we understand on the basis of the expectations and motivations of our time. This leads him to view understanding as a “fusion of horizons” between the past and the present, and to stress the linguistic character of our world experience.
