Although recent media coverage of “pill mills,” or high‐volume and high‐prescribing pain clinics has dramatically increased public awareness of prescription drug abuse, these substances have been used and abused throughout history. Different types of prescription drugs have prompted cause for concern at different time periods. Strict drug control policies have become the primary response aimed at the reduction of prescription drug diversion and corresponding levels of abuse.
