The power differentials between hegemonic and minority languages are interpreted here as an important element of varieties of multilingual contexts. The impact of globalization, communication systems, language revitalization movements, and increased migration flows all contribute to a set of dynamic multilingual transformations. Particular attention is paid to the latest methodological and conceptual advances prompted by a greater embrace of interdisciplinarity and intersectionality; the debate regarding territoriality and networked patterns of communication, together with the apparent tensions between native and new speakers of minority languages within a more diverse multilingual social order.
