One year after his elevation to the Holy See, Alexander famously issued a bull that divided up Europe&s;s New Worlds, assigning all territories west of a vertical line running about 100 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands to Spain and all territories east of the line to Portugal. For sixteenth-century explorers and conquerors, such as Ralegh, New World experience was a series of encounters with occult signs that held the key to an esoteric knowledge and fused both empirical and mystical elements. The importance of Occult Philosophy in the European expansionist project is manifest when we consider some of the earliest treatises about the New World in English. To see the English encounter with the New World in its proper intellectual context, it is important to take a closer look at the textual record of the New World and the intellectual traditions that are employed to contextualize it.
