The wisdom text known as the “Words of Ahiqar” is the oldest known Aramaic literary work. The earliest exemplar is a fragmentary papyrus of fourteen columns (perhaps originally twenty‐one). Found in 1907 in the ruins of a Jewish settlement on Elephantine Island in Upper Egypt, the papyrus is a copy dating from the late fifth century bce . The text was probably composed a century or more earlier.
