Professor G. D. Sharma died suddenly before the final preparation of this volume, sadly depriving us of his profound knowledge of unfamiliar reaches of Indian economic history. He had written to Kaoru Sugihara in November 1989 expressing gratitude for the suggestions made on the first draft of his paper (sentiments repeated in a footnote to the revised version), but also saying that, having made many changes, he now wanted to pass on any further editing to someone else who, as he put it, ‘could oblige me by taking on the task’. I had been responsible for the original suggestions, and accordingly the editors of the volume decided that it was I who should ‘take on the task’ once again. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
