Permanence And Causality

In the first Analogy Immanuel Kant has been professedly concerned with the general conditions of objective time-determination; and he has held that any determination involves objective permanence being somehow represented in perceptions which are themselves constantly changing. Kant proposes to use the truths to prove that certain principles of causality hold of any objects or objective events of which people can have any empirical knowledge through perception. If the use which Kant makes of the notion of a necessary order of perceptions in the sense of the second Analogy is illegitimate, it might still be inquired whether any legitimate use, for purposes at least akin to his, can be made of it. The announced achievement of the Refutation is "to turn the game played by idealism against itself" by proving that empirical self-consciousness is only possible through an immediate awareness of objects in space.
