To date, two groups of scholars, led by Soon Ang and David Thomas, have developed two theoretical models and corresponding measures of cultural intelligence. Ang and colleagues theorized and measured four domains—metacognitive, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral—and relied on a single‐method twenty‐item self‐report survey. This scale is easy to administrate and provides an easy way to compare results across cultures. Thomas and colleagues theorized cultural knowledge, cultural skills, and cultural metacognition as the three domains of cultural intelligence, and used both self‐report and think‐aloud technique in their web‐based instrument. This online assessment tool is more difficult to use but has the strengths of assessing different aspects of cultural intelligence with multiple methods and measuring metacognitive process with a more appropriate technique. This entry describes the development and the psychometric characteristics of each measure and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of both.
