As the first stage of the Rockefeller funding was coming to an end, Butterfield wrote to Thompson noting with missionary-like enthusiasm his intention to lead the Committee into the next stage, subject of course to further Rockefeller support: I must confess that the last two or three meetings have been so good — the discussions, in my view, so much better than ever — hat I have been deterred from taking any step that would end the Committee. It is quite a wonderful thing that these Professors etc. from various Universities are passionately keen on continuing the Committee, if that is possible at all. Our Foreign Office representative, who has been Ambassador in Dakar, has kept a great interest in the Committee, and, now that he is back in England, wants very much to continue. Our Treasury man, William Armstrong was pulled up to the top in Macmillan’s July coup d’état (you may have read the interesting profile of him in last Sunday’s Observer ). I feared he would say he was too busy for our Committee. But he, too, is as keen as ever. 1 These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
