Ethnicity is often assumed to be gender-neutral and to be experienced equally across all social groups, but this may be a considerable oversimplification. Gender appears to have a considerable influence over how ethnic and cultural identities are sustained and transmitted. There are gender differences in how ethnic identity is represented in the visual and archaeological record, as well as in the literary evidence. In communities of mixed ethnicity or in periods of ethnic and cultural change, gender can be an important factor in the processes of ethnic and cultural change. This chapter explores these issues in the context of ancient Italy, a multi-ethnic region of the Mediterranean world in which many different ethnic and cultural groups interacted.
