Language assessment literacy (LAL) is derived from general assessment literacy and refers to the expertise all language assessment stakeholders require to perform assessment tasks and partake in assessment‐based decision‐making. LAL research has progressed steadily since 2008 to becoming one of the most widely researched domains in language assessment, accentuating the assessment language literacy connection, with a focus on language teachers' assessment expertise. The entry discusses the emergence of the concept and its constituents. It asserts the current recognition of its multidimensionality and diverse contextual underpinnings from a critical sociocultural perspective, concluding with the challenges posed in view of technological advent and the broadening of the stakeholder communities.
