Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator was one of the most celebrated and accomplished Roman politicians of the Middle Republic. He achieved his greatest fame during the Second Punic War as a successful general and statesman. He is credited for masterminding the strategy of waging a war of attrition to wear down Hannibal's forces, rather than fighting pitched battles, which favored Hannibal's superior generalship. Adherence to the Fabian Strategy is seen as a key factor in Rome's victory in the war. He earned a lasting legacy in the Roman tradition as the embodiment of traditional republican aristocratic excellence.
