The agora (pl. agorai ; from ageiro : to assemble) was originally an assembly of the entire free male population of a city, as well as the physical location of that assembly. However, with the development of the Greek polis, the agora evolved into the public center of the city, serving as a political, administrative, and religious center, market, and meeting place.
