Wildlife crime has historically been overlooked by the public and social scientists. However, wildlife crime has been shown to negatively impact humans, animals, plants, and the natural environment. The difficulty in defining wildlife crime is discussed, as is the recent social construction of traditional practices in many parts of the world as criminal. Next, the shift among increasingly organized wildlife crime offenders towards economic motivations is documented. Estimates of the environmental and financial impact of wildlife crime are offered. Finally, responses to wildlife crime at various levels by researchers, international organizations, and law enforcement are provided.
