Language for Specific Purposes in Eastern Europe

This entry explores the historical development, current trends, and future directions of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) in Eastern Europe. Against the backdrop of political and economic transitions, it traces the evolution of LSP in the region's post‐socialist educational systems, with attention to the interplay between local linguistic needs and the growing dominance of English. Drawing on existing research, policy documents, and regional surveys, the entry highlights commonalities and differences across countries, with a focus on English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English‐medium instruction (EMI), and multilingual publishing. It examines how globalization, European integration, and digitalization have influenced LSP pedagogy, policy, and research across various disciplines. Special attention is given to the status of ESP teachers, the use of educational technology, and emerging tensions between English and local academic languages. The entry concludes by proposing a set of themes for future inquiry, including teacher development, academic writing, and language policy. Overall, it advocates for more equitable, context‐sensitive approaches to LSP that account for local realities while engaging with global academic practices.
