The ethnographic present refers to 25 August 1990, when I attended a Halk Konseri (People’s Concert) featuring Müshim Gürses, one of a series of free events organized for the Gülhane Park festival. The park is a small wooded area on the slopes between the Topkap1 palace and Saray Burnu, the ‘Seraglio Point’, containing a zoo and a number of tea gardens, all of which are packed on summer week ends. The park is a popular destination for afternoon excursions, since it can be reached easily by train from the outlying suburbs and gecekondu areas to the west of the city walls.
