CyberGIS represents an interdisciplinary field that synergizes advanced cyberinfrastructure, geographic information science and systems (GIS), spatial analysis and modeling, and a number of geospatial domains to improve research productivity and enable scientific breakthroughs. It has emerged as a fundamentally new GIS modality based on holistic integration of high‐performance and distributed computing, data‐driven knowledge discovery, visualization and visual analytics, and collaborative problem‐solving and decision‐making capabilities. This integration requires a bridge across the digital divide between the cyberinfrastructure and geospatial communities. CyberGIS is well poised to enable advances in digital and spatial studies and to nurture emerging digital geospatial ecosystems; it holds great potential for revolutionizing many areas of scholarship, ranging from engineering and science to the humanities.
