Born in Panopolis (present‐day Akhmim) in Upper Egypt, Zosimus ( fl . ca. 300 Suda) appears to be the foremost figure of Greco‐Egyptian alchemy, to which he added a deep mystical dimension. Towards the end of the third century and the beginning of the fourth, he wrote a substantial work in Greek, of which only tiny portions have survived.
