Rabbi Johanan lived in Tiberias, a Galilean city with a relatively large rabbinic population. He has aptly been described as the most prominent Palestinian Amora who ever lived (Hyman 1910: 653). The most obvious proof of this claim is the fact that he is mentioned more frequently in classical rabbinic literature than any other Palestinian Amora. In fact, Talmudic sources suggest that the Palestinian rabbinic community in the late third and early fourth centuries consisted primarily of the circle of Johanan's colleagues and students.
