Alliances are general and franchises specific institutional forms of partnership among organizations. This entry discusses why independent firms engage in relationships and why cooperative arrangements are organized in different institutional forms. Special attention is given to networks of firms in industrial clusters, strategic alliances, and franchise arrangements. Transaction cost theory, the resource‐based view, and the embedded and network‐based view of the firm are important bases for explanations. Circumstances in which spatial characteristics are particularly relevant for alliance formation are highlighted.
