In our study of the heroization of athletes the possibility was raised that the process of heroization might begin in the athletes’ own lifetimes. This raises all sorts of questions; in particular, it has implications for the widespread view that a cult of the living (in the form of ruler cult) became common only after Alexander the Great. The reasons for this watershed in the cult of the living have been sought in both the religious and political domain.
