Located in east central Sicily near the town of Aidone, Morgantina was founded in the Late Bronze Age and inhabited until the first century CE . The foundation legend (Strabo 5.6.1; Dion. Hal. Ant. Rom . 1.12.3) held that the first settlers came from the Italian mainland. In language, material culture, and burial customs, early Morgantina was closely related to the town‐dwelling Sikels of eastern Sicily and Lipari. By ca. 600 BCE imported Greek pottery reached the site, and there is extensive evidence for Greeks in the local population.
