Evagrius (ca. 345–399 ce ), a monastic writer and calligrapher, was born in Pontus. He accompanied Gregory of Nazianzus to Constantinople and became a preacher there under Gregory and his successor, Nektarios. After a short stay in Palestine, where he met Melania the Elder, he spent the rest of his life (from ca. 383) in the Nitrian desert, where he associated with Makarios of Egypt.
