Most surviving sources from the ancient Mediterranean world condemn sexual relations between women. In these cultures, the distinction between the active, insertive role and the passive, receptive role was foundational. Adult free males were to play the active role, whereas all women were supposed to be passive. This view made sexual contact between women hard to fathom.
