In 256 ce the Roman town of Dura‐Europos on the western bank of the river Euphrates was conquered by the Persians after several weeks of siege. The remains the archaeologists were able to find on the site constitute remarkable proof of the imposing siege works and the bitter fighting that led to the fall of the town.
