This entry highlights some of the major communicational and informational issues that inhere in contemporary biotechnology. After briefly reviewing the scientific breakthroughs that facilitated this technoscience, attention turns to the various metaphors and conceptual models imported from communication and information studies to conceptualize our changing understanding of genetics and biotechnology. The treatment offered here also articulates some of the critiques leveled against such conceptualizations, including the ways they have helped facilitate the commodification of biotechnology. The entry then considers specific informational and communicational concerns as they relate to biotechnology, including intellectual property, regulation, media coverage, and popular resistance.
