The purpose of this chapter is to provide updated information about sociodemographic information on research on health psychology, with a focus on ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status. The economic and cultural diversity in the U.S. population continues to grow and present a broad array of factors that produce a variety of outcomes, conditions, and health consequences. The information provided here still represents just a small fraction of the complexity and importance of sociodemographic information to understanding health. We conclude this chapter with some suggestions with regard to methodological refinement of research and insights into possible future directions in behavioral medicine research on ethnically, gender, and economically diverse populations.
