Rural society is highly varied across the world's most economically developed countries, or “Global North,” as well as across the world as a whole. Aspects of rural society include numbers and densities of rural residents, natural resources, and related livelihoods as well as economic characteristics, demographic characteristics, cultural practices, religious and political tendencies, and sense of place. In addition to agriculture, people living in rural places may be involved in fisheries, timber production, tourism, or mining and are often economically dependent on the related resources. In many parts of the Global North, rural populations have undergone change, in some cases with declines in populations overall, shifts in age distributions, or growth in numbers of retiree residents. Although rural populations have declined as a proportion of total populations in the north, rural society and environments are of importance in terms of providing resources and ecosystem services, including food and building materials to Earth's human populace.
