If comedy on screen has been around as long as the screen itself, comedies that interact with history have almost as long a provenance. Conscious use of anachronisms, deconstruction and revision of genre conventions, and the “othering” of the past can be seen in the comic depictions of both Greece and Rome on screen. However, the most notable is the way that the ancient world is used in order to critique a wide range of contemporary concerns, including attitudes to war, imperialism, gender roles and social issues. This chapter considers the representation of ancient Greece and Rome, both as social commentary and as parody, in Europe, United States, and Britain. Outside of Aristophanes, ancient Greece appears on the comic screen only in regard to its mythology. Underlying the laughter are serious issues as well, indicating the central role that Greece and Rome have played in Western cultural identity, and that this role still continues today.
