The principal focus of urban geography has been and continues to be the city, and how political, economic, and social forces and human–environmental relations flow and reverberate through urban landscapes. Urban geography is one of the largest subfields within human geography. Through the twentieth and twenty‐first centuries, urban geographers have used a range of philosophical and epistemological approaches to examine and understand the city, such as positivism, urban political economy, postmodernism, and beyond. It is, however, the spatial perspective emphasized by urban geographers that links the diverse discipline together.
