Warfare was a central occupation for Galatian (Celtic) society. The large bands of Celts who reached Macedonia in 280 BCE and crossed into Asia Minor in 278, were headed by warrior bands, whose leaders owed their status to military success and the booty that was to be won from attacking the rich sanctuaries and settlements of the eastern Mediterranean.
