Conflict between groups is a fact of life at the beginning of the new millennium. Of course it was not supposed to be this way. The ending of the Cold War was expected to herald a new world order. However, as Brown (1997) has pointed out, these ‘great expectations have been dashed’ (p. 80). This is because ‘fierce new assertions of nationalism and sovereignty’ have sprung up and the world is threatened by ‘brutal ethnic, religious, social, cultural, or linguistic strife’ (Boutros-Ghali, 1992, p. 6). Not all of these are strictly new conflicts. Some of them the media just did not bother about during the Cold War and so we in the Western world remained ignorant of their existence. So while the end of the Cold War led directly to the creation of many new conflicts, it also aggravated others that had lain dormant for decades or, exposed still older ones to the light of day.
