As embedded in the multi/plurilingual turn in applied linguistics, plurilingualism is both a theoretical and pedagogical framework that values language diversity, hybridity, and fluidity with a focus on language as a human right and social justice issue. As a theoretical framework, it holistically conceptualizes language users as possessing a repertoire of linguistic, cultural, and semiotic resources, providing a distinctive and nuanced lens to examine language use in a social context. This inclusive conceptualization of language inspires innovation in language pedagogy, requiring educators to view learners as plurilingual users and thus mobilizing pedagogical practices that empower the learning of additional languages, while maintaining and advancing the languages in their repertoire. In research, a critical dimension to plurilingualism is fundamental to identify inequities often experienced by speakers who struggle to be accepted as legitimate users of an additional language. These inequities may be related to differences in language status in a social setting, racism, xenophobia, and ways of knowing, being, and doing that are marginalized in spaces where monolingualism and monoculturalism are expected norms. In pedagogy, plurilingualism contests these inequities by employing practices that empower users of multiple languages to learn additional languages and maintain and advance the languages in their repertoire. With the overarching aim of contributing to inclusive multilingual and multicultural spaces and more equitable and socially just societies, plurilingualism is a key framework in critical applied linguistics. Finally, this article provides examples of key plurilingual pedagogies that have been used in the literature.
