The &s;anthropological’ theory of art proposed in Art and Agency ‘merges seamlessly with the social anthropology of persons and their bodies’ ( Gell 1998 : 7). Alfred Gell does a brilliant job of persuading us that anthropologists should concern themselves with the performative dimension of artefacts. In the first part of the book, at least, he rejects a linguistic approach, dwelling instead on the agency of images.
