This book is dedicated to the history teacher who once wrote in my school report: ‘This boy has no interest in the past whatsoever’. In a way he was right. I don’t. I am far more interested in the present and the future, in why understandings of the past matter and what they can do to help make our future world a better place. This school report has long been my motivation, to explore the contemporary relevance of the past and not just study it for its own sake. So perhaps it is more of an ‘up yours’ than a dedication! Either way, I am grateful. With reference to John Steinbeck’s inspirational (1939) The Grapes of Wrath, the book is also dedicated to Joad families everywhere: resilient, generous, open- and positive-minded people who, in spite of their difficulties, look out for one another and care for the world in which they live.
