Military English (ME) is an umbrella term that refers to the genre‐specific form of the English language used within military contexts. It encompasses a wide range of topics, including terminology, communication practices, language teaching and testing, and language policy of military personnel using and learning English. With more countries joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (e.g., Sweden and Finland), and becoming global partners of NATO (e.g., Korea and Argentina), English has become the lingua franca of the global military context. Despite the recent attention ME has gained due to increased international military collaborations, it is still a relatively new area of study. The current entry summarizes recent findings of the field in terms of ME language, teaching and testing, and policy, and discusses areas that require further investigation.
