This article discusses aspects of language learning and multilingualism in the third age. We address some of the clichés attached to additional language learning in the autumn of life, as well as the fear and defeatism that third‐age learners may feel. We also examine the role of memory (including deficiencies) in the process of learning and using a new language later in life. Finally, we consider motivations to learn additional languages in the third age.
