Modern approaches to Greek city administration arc various and, although usually perfectly legitimate from the modern point of view, do not necessarily reflect the approaches of the Greeks themselves. Therefore, in order to understand Greek city administration at the time, it is necessary not only to be acquainted with modern perceptions but also to go directly to the basic features of administrative life in Asian cities. The richness of their epigraphical material allows us to explore in detail the terminology that was used in Asian city administration and the responsibilities of city officials as well as their interrelationship.
