The Hmong are an Asian ethnic minority dispersed around the globe by the twenty‐first century. Of the estimated five to six million people of Hmong ethnicity in the world, the largest number is found in southern China, followed by Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. After the Second Indochina War, thousands of Hmong from Laos became political refugees and subsequently settled in the United States. Smaller populations migrated to Argentina, Australia, Canada, and France (French Guiana). While no Hmong nation‐state exists, nation‐building efforts have been an integral part of Hmong history across place and time.
