Plataia was a small polis in southern Boiotia. Despite never disowning its Boiotian heritage, it had a fraught relationship with its Boiotian neighbors on account of its refusal to join the koinon in the late sixth century. Instead, it allied with the Athenians. On its lands the battle of Plataia was fought (479 bce ), transforming it into an important lieu de memoire that was exploited and used by external powers such as the Spartans and the Macedonians in the fourth century bce .
