The earliest human settlement in Corsica dates back to the Mesolithic and intensified throughout the Neolithic. During the Bronze Age (2000–850 bce ), the island integrated Nuragic and Italic cultural features from Sardinia and the Italian mainland (material production, architecture, etc.) and progressively incorporated them to forge an original identity. During the Iron Age (850–100 bce ), the island was characterized by extensive cultural fragmentation that separated the north from the south in particular. It is in this period, too, that the Phocaean colony of Alalia was founded on the east coast, and that burial contexts testify to a strong intensification of exchanges with neighboring regions.
