This entry introduces the theory and models of evolution by natural selection as a powerful tool for examining changes that occur naturally in a wide range of complex and dynamic communication systems. The first section provides a brief overview of the development of evolution theory and discusses the difference between Darwinian evolution and other evolutionary ideas. The second section discusses the three fundamental mechanisms of Darwinian evolution—replication, mutation, and selection—and other relevant concepts on the basis of the key literature in modern evolutionary theory. The third section reviews evolutionary game theory and the debates over human rationality it triggered. The fourth section discusses the application of evolutionary models to communication systems, including symbolic and signaling systems and communication networks.
